Leeds Animation Workshop
In 1976 a small group of women in Leeds, England decided to make an animated film about the need for childcare. The newly formed Nursery Film Group based the story on reliable research, and told it from a preschooler’s knee-high point of view. The film took two years to make, and was shown all over Britain and beyond. It formed part of a successful campaign to improve nursery education, for the benefit of children and of their parents – especially mothers. It did so well that they renamed themselves the Leeds Animation Workshop, and have been producing films on social and educational issues ever since.
The five female members of the Workshop run their organization as a not-for-profit, cooperative company. And just as they did in 1976, they continue to create all their films in hand-drawn animation. This gentle style helps to make the complex and sensitive issues addressed in their programs accessible to a broad audience. The films are funny, touching and sometimes heartbreaking.
Whether updating a program or producing an entirely new one, the Workshop staff closely consult with the relevant experts and organizations in the field to ensure they provide the best information.
